The Case for That Someone

Last night around 10 pm, I rounded the corner onto my street and saw two headlights at the end of my driveway. My body relaxed, an unrestrained smile snuck onto my previously solemn face, and I took my first deep breath of the day. After an essentially 12-hour work day, the sight of my boyfriend’s car gave me a renewal of energy. I pulled into my driveway and ran out to the consoling headlights.

Now, I was never the willfully sappy type. As a freshman in college six years ago, I had no intention of settling into a relationship. I was happy navigating my new life solo and avoided commitment at all cost. With a couple relationships in my past and a number of mistakes made, I kept myself unattached and I was completely satisfied with that arrangement.

Rob and I met in 2012 at Marist College. I had that cliche freshman crush on the gorgeous senior and would giggle with my friends about how stupidly attractive that unattainable guy was from across the room. In an extremely unexpected turn of events, I ended up on my first college date with Rob at a nearby Starbucks, the March of my freshman year. After many uncommonly successful dates, I resigned myself over to a relationship that I thought might last a summer. That long distance summer quickly turned into four years.

Again, I am not a willfully sappy person, but I cannot begin to describe how grateful I am for this man. Rob traveled back to Marist for three years before I finally joined him in the “real world.” With a solid post-grad year under my belt, I am in awe of all that this relationship has given me. I nod my head and laugh with my girlfriends about the horrors of dating and the frustrations of finding someone halfway decent, but I know that I am one of the lucky ones. I know it is luck because of how serendipitous my journey has been so far.

Post-grad is a noticeably friendlier adventure when you have someone to support you. Every tearful night, excited celebration, frustrating experience, and eventful milestone is made better with company. Rob’s ability to empathize and motivate is unmatched. I am constantly made better by this person.

There is an argument to be made about needing a rock in a new world. This isn't always found in a significant other. I think we should all consider ourselves the lucky ones if we are able to identify at least one individual that helps us balance our world. A friend, a mom, a dad, a mentor, or anyone willing to help bear the burdens of life. We need that person who reminds us of the wonderful moments tied up amidst our tangled lives.

Even better if we can consider ourselves that person for a lucky someone else. This mutually rewarding bond can hold each other up even in this post-grad perplexity.

I consider myself lucky to be a part of this world of raising each other up.
