WINDROSE READS: Walking on Water (+ A Book Haul Giveaway!)
There are favorite books, and then there are books that I wish I could memorize every single word from the intro to acknowledgements. Walking on Water by Madeleine L’Engle is this type of book.
Apparently Madeleine L’Engle has been a favorite children’s author for quite some time. Given that I’m late to everything (I read Harry Potter when I was 18), I had no idea who she was until this year (A Wrinkle in Time passed me over as a child, I guess). After reading several of her quotes referenced in other books, I figured this woman must be pretty wise, so I ordered Walking on Water back in January, ready to figure out why everyone was quoting the beejezus out of her in their own books.
One page in, and I had already highlighted an entire paragraph.
Walking on Water is L’Engle’s “reflections on art and faith” and the entire book spoke directly to my writer’s soul:
“This principal part of faith is patience,” and this applies, too, to art of all disciplines. We must work every day, whether we feel like it or not; otherwise when it comes time to get out of the way and listen to the work, we will not be able to heed it.”
“In art we are once again able to do all the things we have forgotten; we are able to walk on water; we speak to the angels who call to us; we move, unfettered, among the stars. We write, we make music, we draw pictures, because we are listening for meaning, feeling for healing.”
“We are hurt; we are lonely; and we turn to music or words, and as compensation beyond all price we are given glimpses of the world on the other side of time and space.”
Any creative person (I would argue that’s all of us, and so would L’Engle) will appreciate the gem of wisdom that this book is.
That’s why I’m SO excited to be able to give this book away as Book 1 in Windrose’s Book Haul Giveaway!
