OUR FAVORITE THINGS: Tame Impala's "Currents"
[Welcome to Our Favorite Things, a series featuring—you guessed it!—our favorite things. From books to brands to tunes to film, these are all things we at Windrose want to shout from the rooftops about.]
I’m a simple person with a simple checklist for what makes a great album: a commitment to theme, a track-by-track flow so seamless it’s like one continuous, sonic masterpiece, and lyrical content so #relatable I would consider inking it across my own face if I got sad drunk enough.
Three big checks for Currents, the latest release by Australian psychedelic rock group, Tame Impala.
Change is evident throughout this aptly-named record. It’s a breakup record that is unapologetic in it’s handling of growing up and moving on—something that is nearly impossible to do without hurting or disappointing someone. Frontman and brains behind Tame Impala, Kevin Parker, takes ownership of who he is becoming, and at times, even comes across as harsh. It’s the authenticity to self despite doubting external forces that puts you on his side.
(Insert every line from “Yes I’m Changing” here because I can’t pick just one.)
An obvious shift in sound accompanies this theme of change. Parker hasn’t exactly abandoned his famously fuzzy guitar nuances, but he has embraced pop in a way that clearly separates Currents from previous Tame Impala releases. The Daft Punk-influenced opening track “Let It Happen” doesn’t invite, but forces, you to do exactly just that.
Even Aussie rockers need to dance it out. Just let it happen.
Highlights: “Yes I’m Changing,” “Eventually,” “Let It Happen,” “Nangs,” “New Person, Same Old Mistakes”
We owe everyone who has contributed their stories at least a year’s worth of lattes as a token of our gratitude, but alas, this simple “thank you” will have to carry the weight of our appreciation instead. Thank you, thank you to everyone who has written for, read, and supported That First Year this past year. We exist because of and for YOU and we can't wait for what 2018 will bring to this community.

Hello, new graduate learning how to live off an entry-level salary. I am here with you in your budgeting learning curve. Here are 4 tools I use to earn extra cash.
“Words are our most inexhaustible source of magic,” J.K. Rowling wrote. My girl J.K. nailed it, because I firmly believe words can challenge and shape our perspectives on life. Below are 5 books that I have read multiple times and highlighted the ish outta the pages. I’ve included some of my favorite lines to give you a preview of the goodness you can expect in each book.
I’m not the most widely educated music fan (I dunno what the kids are listening to these days, soz), but when I love an album, I LOVE AN ALBUM, taking upon myself the role of that album’s unpaid hypeman. Below are three underrated (from my perspective) albums that I wish everyone in the entire world had the same intense emotional connection with that I have.
I have created this guide for you all, full of adult-ish wines for adult-ish people. The blends and bubbles on this list range from $9-$15, and all come bottled—a step above a college box, but not going to break the post-grad bank. Think of it as falling somewhere above Andre, but not quite as high as Vueve Cliquot.
As a person who has a playlist for every month, feeling and post-adolescent life event, I was very pleased when That First Year asked me to create one for their Friday Faves series. Friday is a day that tends to bring on a slew of emotions: exhaustion meets excitement, put simply. Friday is day that calls for a two chapter playlist, so I guess that's what we have here. I hope you listen and I hope you enjoy!
I’d like to recommend some of the sources that have helped me through this post-graduate maze in the hopes these suggestions might help you too. Whether it be full length film to pull you out of reality, or a fascinating podcast series, these outlets may help steer you through these turbulent times.
