OUR FAVORITE THINGS: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
[Welcome to Our Favorite Things, a series featuring—you guessed it!—our favorite things. From books to brands to tunes to film, these are all things we at Windrose want to shout from the rooftops about.]
Fans of 30 Rock, lend me your ear. It's time to talk about the newest show to hit your Netflix account.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is the same old story of a twentysomething moving to New York City to start her life again. The only difference is, she was trapped in a bunker for 15 years under the watch of an apocalyptic preacher before she got there.
The show has some eccentric (to say the least) characters that keep the show teeming with jokes and unique story lines. Titus (Tituss Burgess), a black actor/bootleg Iron Man street performer, moved to NYC to pursue his Broadway dreams. Jaqueline Voorhes (Jane Krakowski) is a stay-at-home, uppercrust mom with some downright crazy psyche going on in her noggin. This is Krakowski at her best.
And then there's Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper). Since she entered the bunker in middle school, her outfits look like they popped straight out of the 90s. Bright, mismatched, multicolored outfits. Her Jansport backpack with her name painted on it. Light up sneaks. She is the epitome of a 90s kid.
But her clothes reflect innocence and her knowledge (or lack thereof) of the "real world." You can relate to this post-bunker lady, because just as she's navigating the streets of New York, we're navigating our lives after college. And that's what it's all about, learning a new place but also learning about the other parts of you. Hashbrown: no filter.
Oh! Did we also mention that this show is co-written by none other than the brilliant Tina Fey? It's like Bossypants all over again, but in story format.
If you're looking for a show with one-liners to boot, set up your living room for a quick (and worth it!) binge sesh of the 13 episode first season available exclusively on Netflix.
